indonesian reformation..

The general election that was held on June 7, 1999 was an important mark for the Indonesian to free themselves from the shackles of authoritarianism and to develop a democratic civil society.  This election was the implementation of the spirit of Reformasi which was vigorously expressed by the Indonesian students in the early and mid- of 1998.

This Web-page has several time-lines which show important events in the Reformasi movement.  The first time-line contains news articles of the crippling economic crisis that befell on Indonesia, follows by student demonstrations all across the country that fought the regime which had been in power for decades, continues by reports on the Trisakti tragedy and the devastating riots in Jakarta, and the time-line ends by events surrounding the resignation of Soeharto from the presidency on May 21, 1998

The second time-line traces the changes in politics, social and economic in Indonesia from Soeharto's resignation until the Election of '99.  Inside this page, you can read various features of implementing democracy in Indonesia.  BJ Habibie Administration's policies, for examples, that open civil liberties. And people's expressions about free and fair election to establish a democratic government, eradicate KKN (Ind. for Corruption, Collusion and Nepotism) which pleagued Indonesian society for so long, and end to the excessive government power that stiffle the people's freedom.

Beside the time-lines that point to important events since the mid-1997, this site also provides links to various news sources and analyses on the Internet about Indonesia and its political, social and economic changes.   About the Election '99 for example, visit the Commision on the General Election site where voting results can be accessed.  On reporting of the Election, visit the Kompas Online Special Report (in Indonesian).  International attention is also abundant, as can be read at CNN Interactive on Indonesian Election '99, or at The Straits Times Special Report.
